What is Pyttipanna?

Pyttipanna is a traditional Swedish dish that translates to "small pieces in a pan." It's essentially a hash made from diced potatoes, onions, and usually leftover meat such as beef, ham, or sausage, though variations exist. The ingredients are typically fried together in a pan until they are crispy and golden brown. It's often served with a fried egg on top and sometimes accompanied by pickled beets or cucumbers. It's a popular and hearty dish, particularly for  brunch or lunch in Sweden.

Recipe for Pyttipanna

Ingredients:
500g potatoes, peeled and diced into small cubes
200g cooked meat (such as beef, ham, or sausage), diced
1 onion, finely chopped
2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter
Salt and pepper to taste
Optional: 2-3 eggs for frying
Optional: Pickled beets or cucumbers for serving

Preparation:
If you're using raw meat, cook it beforehand and dice it into small pieces. Alternatively, you can use leftover cooked meat for this dish.
Peel the potatoes and dice them into small, evenly-sized cubes.
Finely chop the onion.

Cooking:
Heat the vegetable oil or melt the butter in a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat.
Add the diced potatoes to the pan, spreading them out in an even layer. Let them cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to turn golden brown and are cooked through.
Once the potatoes are nearly done, add the chopped onion to the pan and continue cooking for another 3-5 minutes until the onion is soft and translucent.
Add the diced cooked meat to the pan with the potatoes and onion. Stir everything together and let it cook for another 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
If desired, fry eggs to accompany the Pyttipanna. In a separate pan, heat a little oil or butter over medium heat. Crack the eggs into the pan and cook them to your liking (e.g., sunny-side-up, over-easy, etc.).

Serving:
Serve the Pyttipanna hot, either on its own or topped with fried eggs. Optionally, serve with pickled beets or cucumbers on the side for added flavor contrast.
