We asked Per Andersson, Work Environment & Safety Coordinator at Fagersta Stainless, a well-known steel industry in Sweden.

The fit is extremely important on all PPE; it must be comfortable for the user. But no PPE is made to be used for more than 8 hours straight, says Per Andersson.

He emphasizes the importance of also having a well-thought-out strategy for PPE products at the company.
When you work with people's lives and health, you must have a method, says Per. The safety coordinator must be the engine of that approach and the link between the company management and the employees on the floor.

Per Andersson concludes that encouraging workers to wear protective equipment is not only about saving money or complying with rules but also about saving lives, preventing injuries, and mitigating risks of life-long health issues such as cancer, circulatory problems, and allergies for the employees.

To maintain high compliance, it is important to follow these steps:

  1. Choose products that the users find nice, comfortable, and do not hinder their work.
  2. Ensure that there is always information available on how and when to use the protective equipment, such as providing guidance during the distribution of protective clothing.
  3. Provide adequate training, especially to the safety personnel, to ensure proper use and maintenance of the protective equipment.
