JALAS Safety Footwear: Innovation Through User Feedback

Safety shoes should do more than protect—they need to feel good all day. At JALAS, over a century of craftsmanship meets user-driven design. Product Manager Anniina Suninen explains how listening to wearers shapes every new model.

The Users’ Voice in Development

Designing safety footwear takes more than materials and standards — it takes expertise. For over three years, Anniina Suninen has been part of the JALAS product development team. Together with her colleagues, she is responsible for the wide range of footwear and for ensuring that new models meet real needs. The team brings together experts from different areas of safety footwear — from ergonomics and materials science to design and field testing — making sure every shoe is built on deep knowledge and hands-on experience.

“We often travel together with the sales team to meet end users, hear about their experiences, and see how the shoes work in daily life. That’s absolutely crucial to developing the right products,” she explains.

A Hundred Years of Experience

Since 1916, JALAS has been making shoes, and this long experience shows in the craftsmanship. A single safety shoe can consist of up to 50 carefully selected components—all designed to balance safety, comfort, and ergonomics. Today, JALAS offers around 140 models, from airy shoes for indoor environments to versions that withstand extreme cold or heat.

From Idea to Finished Product

The development of a new model often begins with requests and observations from users. This is followed by a long process that includes both laboratory tests and practical trials in real work environments.

“It’s only when we see how the shoe performs in daily use that we know we’ve succeeded—both in terms of durability and comfort,” says Suninen. A simple update may take less than a year, while an entirely new model can require two years or more of work.

Feedback as a Driving Force

Feedback from users is a central part of the entire process. JALAS collects input through digital surveys, company meetings, and close dialogue with resellers.
“We really want input from those who use the shoes daily—both regarding function and design. That gives us invaluable insights,” Suninen explains.

Looking Ahead

The safety shoes of the future will be lighter, sportier, and more similar to regular sneakers. At the same time, the use of recycled and bio-based materials is increasing, and new solutions for slip resistance and shock absorption are being continuously developed.

“Safety is always number one, but design and sustainability are becoming increasingly important. That makes development both challenging and exciting,” she concludes.
